“Groovy 70’s Come Back to Lake Deaton with their Groovy 70s” Disco Event. If you had driven by Lake Deaton UMC last Tuesday night you would have been caught up in the excitement there, because they brought back the glitz and glam of the 70s disco period with their “Groovy 70’s Disco Party”. The hanging disco ball decor and place settings that feature disco records. Hippies and flower children were all around at the dinner dance. Singles and couples mingled and danced just like an old fashion hootenanny in the 70’s.
It’s no secret that the seventies had some of the finest musicians the world has ever seen. Lionel Ritchie and Donna Summers were in their prime and releasing some of their most famous hits. The Music last Tuesday was exceptional. It captured the exciting feeling of the era. The DJ for the evening was, Leo Steffen. Leo is also known in The Villages as the performer called “The Traveling Nerd”. He spun records from the era for almost three hours and all participants danced the night away doing their favorite dances from the 70’s (Line Dances, The Hustle, The Bump, the Hully Gully, just to name a few). The attendees helped avoid the drab and find their fab. The Lake Deaton’s CLC was decorated with all the vibrant colors of the seventies, they had red streamers, vinyl record place mats, tablecloths, and utensils. The coordinator of the event, Joanne Lord, was quoted as saying, “you can never have too much glitter!” She also indicated that, “the retro photo booth was busy all night.” Reverend Dr. Jim Divine reported that the proceeds from the evening went to support the Church’s community outreach programs, specifically hurricane relief from Hurricane Ian. Lake Deaton UMC is located at 6500 Wesleyan Way, in The Villages, the building is accessible by car or by golf cart. These types of events will be happening quarterly at the church over this year (movie nights, concerts, Octoberfest, and Grow Night). Grow Night is a unique Wednesday night event that takes place during winter and early fall… The activities frequently include dinners, classes, movies, and even an update on one of our partnerships in the Congo.
